A wheelchair-bound Otjiwarongo resident, Churupatti Katjivena has appealed to banks to make their ATMs accessible to disabled people.
Katjivena says although some ATMs cater to their people on wheelchairs, mobility differs from person to person.

"Some people can move well close to an ATM, some people are paraplegic and some are quadriplegic, when you want to reach the ATM to press the button, you might fall out of your wheelchair because it is a bit difficult."

Katjivena also has an issue with the height of ATMs as some wheelchair-bound people cannot see on the screen.

Not only that, space for mobility with their wheelchairs is also limited as the ATMs are inwards and not protruding to be more accommodative for wheelchair users.

"I think all bank managers must think of us people with disability to be able to have access to our money."

ATM security guards however come in handy for wheelchair users needing assistance but they might not be available all the time.

"You have to struggle yourself or sit there and wait for someone passing by to assist you and not all people are trustworthy."

She further said, getting a person to assist you also means extra cost as they have to give N$20 or N$50 out of courtesy for the assistance.
