The General Secretary of the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union, Justina Jonas, is unhappy with the current working conditions of employees constructing the Aussenkehr Clinic in the ||Kharas Region.
There are about 15,000 inhabitants who work mainly for grape-producing companies.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services is currently constructing a new clinic for residents, which started in October last year.
Speaking to nbc News on-site, Jonas says workers are not provided with adequate protective and safety gear, which is a violation of the collective agreement.
"By then, when we came here, workers were not given safety boots, the overalls given are still in dispute, and the type of overalls that were given to us were not specified for the trade. We still have to deal with that. There are issues related to conditions of employment, for example, issues of sick leave, living allowance, and the entire compliance with the collective agreement between MUNWU and CIF."
The contractor at this site is Ongoma Trading Enterprises, which currently employs 87 workers.
"They also had issues with ablution facilities. "We are also seeing changes there; however, we remain concerned about accommodation, and while we understand that they have added an additional room, we still want to know how many employees will be sleeping in these structures."
When contacted for comment, the main contractor, Zombo Ngoma, told nbc News that the majority of the workers' grievances had been addressed following an intensive meeting with the union and regional representatives.
