20th Under 11/13 Cricket festival ends

The Annual junior cricket festival that caters for U11 and U13 age groups was played throughout the course of last week and came to a successful end this past weekend. The junior cricket tournament, which was established 20 years ago, was previously known as the Spur Week. When Salt Refiners took over the sponsorship in 2004, it was however renamed accordingly. The most recent edition of the prestigious event saw young cricketers compete over five days in the U-11 and U-13 age groups, representing teams from Windhoek Gymnasium, Walvis Bay High School, Pro-Ed, !Nara Primary School, Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool, Walvis Bay Primary and St George's. The event annually provides for a unique opportunity for young cricketers, as many players who participated in this tournament later progressed in the ranks and represented Namibia - even at senior national level. The sports spectacle has been a regular feature on the Namibian school calendar since its inception and also won the International Cricket Council (ICC) development award for best junior cricket promotional programme/development initiative in 2003 and 2006. The 2017 tournament was played in good spirit and gave all young cricketers and their coaches a chance to prepare for the upcoming school cricket leagues. Lasting memories were created; new friendships formed on and off the field of play and the tournament was also important in the promotion of positive cricket etiquette.
