Swakopmund-Women’s Rugby is once again on the rise in Namibia, as more and more ladies take up the sport. Many of them are currently busy with preparations for trials, which are to be held in Windhoek. In the past two years, women’s Rugby in the country nearly came to a complete standstill. In 2018, however, things are looking up once again, and young women from all over Namibia are getting active in the sport code. The coastal region’s ladies are some of the front runners in taking up the game, with more than 30 players present here, and two teams currently practising in Walvisbay. The players are between 14 to 20 years of age, and very determined to keep women’s rugby alive in the region. They are showing other regions that it is possible to have women’s rugby teams, as this also forms part of the NRU’S directives. The coastal ladies are hard at work for the upcoming trials to be held in Windhoek on the 23rd of September, whereby a national under 18 team will be selected to tour South Africa later in the year as well. The women from Walvis had some game time a week ago already, when they participated in the De Duine Rugby festival. The coastal region will be sending two teams to the trails and coach Henry Cookson is looking forward the trials. “We took the initiative of using the get into Rugby program and through that got the schools whereby the NRU gave us the tools to educate them and get them to the field. There are more players coming through the ranks and very glad for the huge improvement since May this year, our second tournament we hosting and hoping on more teams to come and join us in events like this” Cookson said. The trials will see eight teams from as far as Rundu competing against one another.
