General Officer Commanding the 4th Artillery Brigade, General Alweendo Namukwambi, has called on Namibians to work together to create a safe space for women.

General Namukwambi was speaking at the celebration of International Women's Day at the Jonas Shoongeleni Ndeimana Barracks outside Otjiwarongo.

As Namibia joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Women's Day, General Namukwambi says countless women are occupying leadership positions, including in the fields of science, the arts, and technology.

Rising number of GBV cases a thorn in the flesh - Shikongo

4815 cases of gender-based violence have been registered with the police between April 2023 and January 2024.

The statistics were released by the Chief of Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, who said that the figures paint a grim picture and that that requires an urgent change of attitude in society.

Inspector General Joseph Shikongo further revealed that GBV cases have become the order of the day, particularly in some regions.

More investment in women's leadership needed

The Deputy Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Bernadette Jagger, has called for more investment in women's leadership for a more just and equal society.

Jagger says there is a need for dialogue and to map out responsive ways to uplift women.

Bernadette Jagger also invited state-owned enterprises and the private sector to equally heed the call to invest in the empowerment of women.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted Namibia's progress in women's empowerment, pointing out the areas of economy, education, and politics.

Zambezi commemorates International Women's Day

Rosa Namises urges equity for women on the ground

Activist and Director of Women’s Solidarity Namibia say that though Namibia ranks 8th on the World Economic Forum's list of countries that have managed to close the gender gap in leadership positions, we should still strive to empower women on the ground.
