First Lady Sustjie Mbumba beamed with pride as she welcomed the Ethiopian Airlines flight, operated entirely by women at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, on this International Women's Day.
Mbumba said that Ethiopian Airlines, which was operated by nine women, is more than just a journey from one destination to another but a symbol of how far women have come and should serve as a reminder of how much more women can achieve.
The atmosphere was electric, filled with applause and admiration for the all-female crew who had just touched down.
First Lady Sustjie. Mbumba said that this is proof that when women are given the opportunity, they soar literally and figuratively.
This year's theme for International Women's Day is "Accelerate Action" and urges both men and women to push forward in the fight for gender equality.
The First Lady emphasised that while progress has been made, the work is far from over.
She reflected on the aviation industry, historically dominated by men, and praised the growing number of women breaking through.
"Ethiopia has set a wonderful example in increasing women's representation in aviation. Namibia is following suit, and I'm especially proud of all our female pilots, including my daughter."
But beyond the flight deck, Mbumba reminded women everywhere of their power.
Saying that no one can define womanhood for women.
When women are strong, communities thrive, workplaces improve, and the world becomes a better place, said Mbumba.
