A 27-year-old seven-year-old woman was admitted to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital after she was hit by a stray bullet, shot by a member of the Police Special Reserve Force this morning.

The victim, a restaurant employee in the center of town, had just arrived at work and was opening the workplace for the day.

A colleague and witness to the incident says that, upon arriving, they found members of the police arguing and attempting to arrest a group of people.

The witness says they decided to take shelter in the shop after police tried chasing them from the scene.

The Zambezi Health Directorate has urged expectant mothers in rural areas to make use of the maternity waiting shelter at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital.

The shelter, funded by the Social Security Commission of Namibia, was inaugurated last year to accommodate expectant mothers from rural areas while waiting to deliver.

Kachana Sikanda, a senior registered nurse and member of the management team responsible for nursing services at the hospital, said about 21 expectant mothers have so far made use of the facility since its inauguration.
