Spending Mother's Day behind bars

Today is Mother's Day, a time when many children express their love with hugs and heartfelt words. However, not all mothers will experience these joys. 

The nbc News team visited the Windhoek Correctional Facility, where we spoke with mothers who are serving time.

The Windhoek Correctional Facility walls are home to women, some of whom have committed heinous crimes, who are serving time while being rehabilitated and prepared for reintegration into society.

Family members of Fishrot accused hold silent protest

Family members of the detained fishrot suspects held a silent protest this morning in front of the Windhoek Correctional Facility.
 
The group gathered there, hoping to catch the attention of Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) officials and amplify their request. 

The group of nearly twenty, comprising various family members of the detained fishrot suspects, braved the chilly morning weather on Monday to express their concerns related to the ongoing safety of the suspects.

Namibia's notorious inmate 'Ninja' released from prison

From being a gang leader to a free man, arguably Namibia's most renowned inmate, Ninja, is released from prison.

This is after 25 years locked inside the Windhoek Correctional Facility.

Having completed his sentence for murder, Paulus Shimweefeleni commended staff at the Windhoek correctional facility for helping him become the changed man he claims to have become.

Accompanied by correctional officers, Shimweefeleni could not contain his emotions as he took his first steps outside of prison.

Steve Biko Booys turns to High Court

Rape and incest-accused former Parliamentarian Steve Biko Booys, whose bail application was denied four times at the lower courts, has turned to the Windhoek High Court with hopes of regaining his freedom.

The High Court will deliver its judgement on Booys' plea for freedom on Friday.

The former Okahandja regional councillor has been in custody since his arrest in 2021.

Biko Booys was an outspoken regional councillor, and he became a member of parliament on the ticket of the Swapo party, with a seat in the upper house.

Michael Amushelelo appears at Katutura Magistrate Court

Arrested activist Michael Amushelelo appeared at the Katutura Magistrate Court on Monday, and lawyer Kadhila Amoomo, who is representing Amushelelo, announced that the state continues to oppose bail after his client's arrest.

Amoomo wrote on his social media that Amushelelo, who is being housed at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, will now be held in solitary confinement out of fear that he may politically influence other offenders.
