MeatCo's Rundu abattoir inaugurated

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform officially handed over the Rundu abattoir to MeatCo yesterday.

The abattoir is intended to serve as a market for cattle and small stock farmers in the Kavango East, West, and surrounding regions.

The construction of the Rundu abattoir started in 2014 and was expected to be completed in 2017.
 
The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, stated that the outbreak of COVID-19 and disruptions in tourism and other economic activities delayed the completion of the abattoir.

Namibia celebrates Youth Day

Youth in the Kavango East Region joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Youth Day at Rundu.

The event was organized by the Youth Ambassador of the region to foster discussions on green skills and sustainability.

The Youth Ambassador role was established in 2020 during the outbreak of COVID-19 and emerged as a dynamic force in combating the spread of the virus.

MICT launches National Symbols campaign

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology launched its National Symbols Campaign at Rundu.

The campaign aims to create awareness about the protocols and significance of the country's national symbols, which are often not respected by some.

The launch of the national symbols campaign started off with a march from the Governor's Office.

During the campaign, the Police Force gave a demonstration on how to properly hoist and handle the Namibian and AU flags.

Dispute over the construction of Ndama South School settled

The dispute over the construction of Ndama South School at Rundu is finally over.

The contractor is now on site and has started with the first phase of construction.

Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo acknowledged that the community was not a party to the dispute but that it was rather due to an error by the Ministry of Education, Art, and Culture, which handed over the site to the contractor without the consent of the Council.

The Ndama South School is expected to decongest the junior and combined schools, which are presently accommodated on one premise.

Kavango East Education Directorate ordered to resume construction at Ndama South

Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo has directed the Education Directorate and the contractor to resume construction at Ndama South with immediate effect.

In a letter to the Deputy Director of Cooperate Planning in the Ministry of Education, Alex Sikume, Wakudumo says he has resolved the matter with all parties involved.

The Governor says he visited the two sites to familiarise himself with the situation on the ground, and it was resolved that work must continue at the Ndama South site.

16 Shishugho family members married

The 16 deceased members of the Shishugho family were buried today at Kayova Village in Kavango East's Ndiyona Constituency.

A large number of mourners from the region and beyond gathered to pay their last respects.

At the memorial service on Friday, speaker after speaker described the incident as among the darkest in the country's history.

The Shishugho family, many of whom were children, tragically lost their lives in a matter of days after consuming a meal two weeks ago.
