All systems go for upcoming National Skills Competition

Despite encountering a few challenges, such as the short supply of materials and equipment in the northern regions, the steering committee of the third National Skills Competition is optimistic that all will be set for the competition on Tuesday.

Speaking to nbc News, the chairperson of the committee, Tobias Nambala, says the procurement of some materials in the northern regions has been a challenge.

He said some of the equipment was damaged during the transportation process from Windhoek.

Police, Media trained to coexist

The Namibian Police, in conjunction with UNESCO, concluded a training of trainers workshop titled 'Project on Training Security Forces in Promoting Freedom of Expression and the Safety of Journalists'.

Over 54 participants were trained at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College in the capital.

Among the training's main aims were to improve the working relationship between media and law enforcement agencies and reinforce citizen trust in the police force.

AI can infringe on human rights

Artificial intelligence (AI) can infringe on human rights if not properly understood or utilised.

These were some of the sentiments shared by various speakers at the stakeholder engagement on the implementation of UNESCO recommendations on the ethics of AI.

The engagement follows the adoption of the Windhoek Outcome Statement on Artificial Intelligence in Southern Africa last year, aimed at strengthening multistakeholder cooperation and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Deputy Commissioners attend leadership course

The recently promoted Deputy Commissioners in the police have been encouraged to utilise a leadership course as a means to instigate positive transformations in the police force.

The Deputy Commissioners are currently participating in a five-day leadership course at Swakopmund.

The course covers topics such as conflict resolution, crisis management in emergency situations, and the influence of culture on performance.

NYS recruits urged to embrace training

The Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, has urged the new recruits of the National Youth Service at Henties Bay to embrace the training and gain skills to become self-dependent and thus contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

More than 5,500 applications were received for this year's intake from all 121 constituencies.

This is the first time that the NYS Henties Bay Centre is open for activities since its closure in 2017, when the National Service Training moved to Rietfontein.

Amupanda demanded to cease from defamatory allegations against Kandjii-Murangi

Lawyer Clive Kavendji of Kangueehi & Kavendjii Inc. has written to activist Dr. Job Amupanda, demanding that Amupanda cease and desist from posting "false and defamatory" allegations against the Minister of Higher Education, Training, and Innovation, Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi.

Dr. Amupanda posted on his social media platforms that the minister has used her office to corruptly use public funds through means of travel allowances in the amount of about N$1,5 million.

The Break Free Anti-violence campaign hosted response training for front-line service providers and student representatives.

The campaign aims to provide a platform for Namibians to actively and meaningfully contribute to reducing violence in the society

The training will also focus on increasing knowledge and understanding of Gender-Based Violence and femicide as well as impart skills on response to GBV cases and preventing measures.

Ben Schernick, a gender specialist gave an overview of the training. 

Elombe Village women receive jam-making training

A group of women from Elombe Village received a one-day jam-making training at Ongwediva offered by officials from the Urban and Rural Development Ministry.

The one-day jam-making process focused on value addition, where rural people are empowered to produce food from their local produce that is easily accessible to them.

This time around, they gathered under the tree to receive training on how to make jam from marula, a plentiful seasonal fruit accessible at almost every rural household in the north.

MICT Minister reiterates importance of training communications officers

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Peya Mushelenga, has reiterated the importance of training communications officers in the public sector as they prepare for the implementation of the Access to Information Act.

Dr. Mushelenga made these remarks at the ministry's weeklong training for communications officers at Oshakati.

The training is being attended by over 50 communication officers from different public institutions. 

Young women complete tailoring training in Kavango East Region

About 16 young women from the Kavango East Region completed their training in tailoring through the Dreams program.

The graduates also received toolkits comprising of sewing machines, materials, and ironing boards to start their own businesses.

The program which was introduced in the region in 2021, is funded by the U.S President's Emergency Plan for Aids to support adolescent girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 24 as well as their parents and partners to prevent new HIV infections.
