Agriculture sectors contribution to GDP shows consistent growth

There is a revival in the agriculture sector, and its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) has picked up and is showing consistent growth.

There are, however, some challenges remaining in the agricultural sector, namely the pricing of food owing to geopolitics.

The consumer price had increased sharply, but on the other hand, there was also a reduction in prices for producers.

Agriculture Ministry prepares draft resettlement criteria

Small-scale farmers who, in the future, would want to be resettled could be required to have resource ownership or access capital to the value of at least N$200,000 per year.

They must, however, relinquish any agricultural land rights they may hold elsewhere in the country.

The information is contained in the draft resettlement criteria, which were presented to stakeholders in the |Khomas Region for revision.

Swapo Party VP encourages nation to invest in Agriculture

The Swapo Party Vice President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has encouraged the nation to invest in agriculture to diminish unemployment amongst the youth and reduce poverty.

Nandi-Ndaitwah was speaking at a Swapo Party rally at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region, which was held in preparation for the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections next year.

The rally attracted supporters from all corners of the country.

DAPP students promote agriculture at Mabushe

A student from Development Aid from the People to People Institute of Zimbabwe has undertaken to share knowledge in agriculture with his fellow villagers at Mabushe in the Kavango East Region.

Marcelius Kanyetu says the initiative will help mitigate poverty in the village and promote a balanced diet at the household level.

Kanyetu is training youth and elders on how to maintain backyard gardens and also educating them on the importance of tree planting.

He says many people do not want to participate in agriculture because they believe it is costly.

Production continues at Etunda Green Scheme Irrigation Project

The Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Ministry has denied claims that there is no production taking place at the Etunda Green Scheme Irrigation Project in the Omusati Region.

The farm manager, Sacky Shilyomunhu, says there has been no work halted at the project and its business as usual.

Shilyomunhu says when the green scheme projects were returned to the Agriculture ministry last year, the ministry commenced with various interventions, including mobilising funds to ensure continued production at various green schemes in the country, including at Etunda.

Government committed to prioritising investment in agriculture

Finance and Public Enterprises Minister Ipumbu Shiimi says the government is committed to ensuring that investment in agriculture in the Zambezi Region is prioritised.

Shiimi observed that the government is aware that the region has fertile land and that traditional authorities have made land available for agricultural activities.

The Minister made the remarks on Sunday at Chinchimane in Sibbinda Constituency as the Mafwe Community celebrated the annual Lusata cultural festival.

Gobabis Municipality commits land

This came after various non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders promised to assist the malnutrition-stricken region with sustainable food production projects through the office of the Omaheke Governor.

These were the views of the Chief Agriculture Technician in the Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform Ministry, George Haufiku, who, in an interview with nbc News, encouraged livestock farmers to select quality breeds rather than farm simply for the purpose of multiplication.

The Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair hosts the agricultural sector, with fine-quality breeds of cattle, goats, and sheep displayed for sale.

Haufiku says good breeds result in increased quality of meat and milk and ensure genetic diversity.

Namibia to fulfil its domestic food needs by 2023

Namibia will have the ability to fully meet its local food consumption demand by 2030.

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said this when she received a donation of N$2,2 million from the government of Brazil.The funds will complement the government's efforts to end hunger by 2030 through livelihood projects.

The fund, which is administered through the World Food Programme, aims to upscale the implementation of five 'Food System Projects' across the country.

Namibia to benefit from Algeria in various sectors

Namibia stands to benefit from Algeria's Agency of International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development.

Potential sectors for such financing encompass agriculture, education, and health.
 
In February of this year, Algeria unveiled a fund of N$18.7 billion aimed at financing development projects throughout the continent.

The Algerian government has outlined that the fund will particularly target projects that advance continental integration and expedite development in Africa.
