Fishing sector indebted to Geingob

Key players in the country's fishing sector say they are indebted to the late President Hage Geingob for saving it from imminent collapse, especially at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Geingob's intervention to keep the fishing sector running when most of the sectors were closing down saved jobs and the Namibian economy alike.

The fisheries sector is among Namibia's key foreign income earners and among the largest employers.

NamRA concern over fishing sector tax contribution

The Nambia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has expressed concern over the minimal contribution of the fishing sector in taxes.

Its Board members and Executive Management paid a courtesy call on President Hage Geingob at State House.

The fishing sector is one of Namibia's key contributors to the Gross Domestic Product, yet its contribution to the taxman is one of the lowest.

As of March this year, NamRA had collected about N$57 billion in taxes, and the sector accounts for only about 2%.
