Shifeta warns against operating unregistered lottery activities

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, is warning those operating unregistered lottery activities to stop, saying it is illegal.

Those who do not comply will run the risk of either being fined, imprisoned, or both.

The Minister says he continues to observe non-adherence, particularly related to the Lotteries Act.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, has expressed confidence in the youth of Namibia and Africa as a whole.

He emphasised the importance of leveraging the valuable insights gained from the just-ended Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge held over the weekend in order to capitalise on the abundant opportunities in the tourism industry.

Shifeta conveyed these thoughts during the closing ceremony of the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge in Swakopmund.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, has reminded African youth of their crucial role as true and reflective ambassadors of the continent's society and the tourism economy.

Shifeta emphasised that the youth have the power to shape perceptions, promote cultural diversity, and drive sustainable tourism development in Africa.

The Tourism Minister said this during the opening of the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge at Swakopmund, where about 38 countries from Africa are taking part either physically or virtually.

Shifeta to decide on Recon Africa's Environmental Clearance Certificate amendments

This comes after concerned members of the public launched an appeal against the Environmental Commissioner's decision to grant an amendment.

Increase in population of brown fur seals at Cape Cross raises concern

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta has expressed concern at the increase in the population of brown fur seals at Cape Cross.

The Cape Fur Seal colony on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia is the biggest on the African coast, with over 100,000 seals.
 
The months of October, November, and December are usually the seal breeding season, where male seals reserve and defend their territories that consist of harems of between five and 25 females.

MEFT inaugurates four national parks facilities

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism urged workers at national parks in Kunene and Erongo Regions, to maintain the newly renovated facilities at a cost of more than N$130 million.

Pohamba Shifeta said this during the handing over of equipment and inauguration of the four national parks facilities at the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, Sprinkbokwaser, Ugab Mund, and Mowebay.

The renovation comes after the groundbreaking ceremony in 2021 for the four national parks facilities.

Over 30 people die in human-wildlife conflict

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta has revealed that a total of 33 people have died as a result of the human-wildlife conflict from 2019 to date.

Shifeta provided fellow MPs in the National Assembly with an update on the current status of human-wildlife conflict throughout the country.

Shifeta said a total of N$3,3 million was paid as compensation for loss of lives - with crocodiles, hippos, and elephants the main culprits in such attacks.

Namibia Tourism Expo launches

The Namibia Tourism Expo for 2023 was launched in Windhoek today (Friday).

The Tourism Expo aims to showcase the country's diverse tourism activities, and it will be held on April 26–28, at the Windhoek Country Club. 

At the event, Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta called for stakeholder participation to ensure the successful holding of the Expo.

Shifeta appealed to exhibitors to diversify their products to attract a wide range of visitors.

MEFT calls on communal farmers to embrace food diversification to improve their livelihoods

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has called on communal farmers to embrace food diversification to improve their livelihoods and the country's food security.

Pohamba Shifeta made the call when handing over the Climate Change Project to the |Huibes Conservancy in the Hardap Region. 

The Climate Change Project, under the theme 'Integrated Wildlife and Sustainable Rangeland Management for Improved Livelihoods,' is funded by the Environment Investment Fund.
