Namwater completes construction of water canal in Omusati Region

Namwater has completed the construction of the water canal at a cost of N$93.5 million.

The construction of a 5.8-kilometer canal, which stretches from Omahenene to Olushandja in the Omusati Region, commenced in February last year.

The project is part of the reconstruction of the entire water canal, which measures about 150 kilometers from Omahenene to Oshakati in the Oshana Region.

Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa were awarded the UNESCO Peace Award for cooperation in transboundary groundwater governance and management in Paris, France.

Namibia and other African countries attended the two-day UN-Groundwater Summit, which was themed "Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible." The gathering looked at various aspects, such as how African countries can cooperate in groundwater management and utilization.

AR accuse respondents in Redline removal case of deploying delaying tactics

The Affirmative Repositioning movement has accused the respondents in a case in which it demands the removal of the Veterinary Cordon Fence of deploying delaying tactics to avoid arguments on the merits of the case.

AR activist-in-chief, Dr. Job Amupanda, was referring to technical arguments in the case, which are not necessarily the merits of the case.

Dr. Amupanda says these delaying tactics are aimed at financially draining him and derailing him from proceeding with the case.

Request to write off two town councils debts could cripple NamWater- Schlettwein

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, says a request to write off debts of N$56 million by two town councils could cripple NamWater.

The request was made by the Okakarara and Otavi town councils for debt incurred due to poor revenue collection from rates and taxes.

Schlettwein said it's not a feasible decision to write off debt as it would financially cripple the water utility.

Namwater is owed N$637 million in debt. Of this, Okakarara and Otavi owe more than N$14 million and N$41 million, respectively.

African countries urged to place water at the top of their development agenda

The President of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) has called on African countries to appropriately place water at the top of their socioeconomic development agenda.

Carl Schlettwein made the call at the closing of the 13th Ordinary Session of the Executive Committee of AMCOW in Windhoek today.

The Namibian Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform stressed that the economic value of water is irreplaceable as no socioeconomic development is possible without it.
