Residents of Windhoek have embarked on a mass protest against commercial banks over home repossessions.

The protests are set to be undertaken nationwide.

Led by the National Ownership Association, protestors say the issue of repossession has been a longstanding concern, and many citizens have lost their primary residence as a result.

The petitioners want an amendment to the law to allow people to live dignified lives.

Windhoek residents have been reacting with mixed feelings regarding the municipality's latest decision to charge when one reports maintenance-related matters to the city.

Residents will pay forty cents for each text message they send to the municipality.

Residents now have a platform where they can report incidences, such as water leaks, pipe bursts, overflowing and blocked sewers, and power outages, allowing the municipality to attend to these matters.

Windhoek residents unhappy with City of Windhoek low-cost housing initiative

Many residents have appreciated the City of Windhoek for building and delivering on its low-cost housing initiative.

However, while they are finally living in decent houses, some, such as Amalia Hoxobes, refuse to pay the monthly instalment, arguing that the amount is not commensurate with the services provided by the municipality.

Amalia Hoxobes, a resident of Freedom Land, has been living on this plot for more than three decades.
