Etunda irrigation project to have bumper harvest - Shilyomunhu

Breadcrumb

The Etunda Irrigation Project in the Omusati Region has 180 hectares of maize under irrigation, and its acting farm manager, Sackey Shilyomunhu, says if all goes according to plan, they should have a bumper harvest.

Shilyomunhu says their intention was to plant 420 hectares of maize this year, but this could not be achieved due to the late acquisition of agricultural inputs.

The maize under irrigation currently will be harvested in July.

The farm plans to plant another 240 hectares of maize in August.

Broken, outdated equipment at Etunda Irrigation Scheme hampers operations

Breadcrumb

Outdated equipment, facilities, and tractors that have been broken for about six years now are said to be hampering operations at the Etunda Green Scheme Irrigation Project in the Omusati Region.

Etunda has 450 hectares of commercial farming units. Currently, they have planted 24 hectares of lucerne, which is now the project's main source of income.

This has seen farmers queuing up as early as four o'clock in the morning in search of lucerne for their livestock.

There are also four hectares of vegetables under irrigation.
