MPs call for the reduction of seal population to protect fish stock

The increase in the number of seals in the population threatens the fish species in the Namibian waters, hence the need to control them.

Motivating his motion in the National Assembly, RDP leader Mike Kavekotora says a balance needs to be found to protect fish species for human consumption and the conservation of seals.

Situated on the southwestern coast of Africa along the Atlantic Ocean, Namibia is one of the countries endowed with aquatic resources, predominantly fish of various types.

Increasing TAC for hake and horse mackerel proposed

Increasing in Total Allowable Catch for hake and horse mackerel, is one of the solutions proposed, to create active employment for fishermen who recently resigned at Walvis Bay.

Close to 600 fishermen quit their jobs because they were not happy receiving a monthly allowance of four thousand dollars while sitting at home.

Representatives of the fishing companies, where fishermen resigned, were summoned by a Parliamentary Standing Committee recently.
