Parliamentary Standing Committee shocked that GRN by Government and mines

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources says it is shocked that the government has no shares in some mines.

The committee visited three of the Otjozondjupa Region's six mines.

The MP's first visit was to the Cheetah Cement Plant.

90% of Whale Rock Cheetah Cement Factory is owned by two Chinese companies based in the Orient, while the other 10% is owned by a local company.

The mine's General Manager, Yuhui Shao, spoke through an interpreter.

Parliamentary Standing Committee bemoans bureaucracy in the country's efforts to ensure food security.

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Vincent Mareka says besides budgetary constraints, bureaucracy continues to hamper progress to attain food security in the country.

Vincent Mareka made these remarks during a visit by the Committee to the Hardap and ||Kharas regions on Namibia's readiness to mitigate food insecurity.

Farmers in Hardap commended for their role in food security

Small and Medium scale farmers in the Hardap Region were commended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, for playing a role in food security in the country.

The parliamentary oversight committee visited the Hardap Green Scheme Irrigation Project at Mariental and also engaged stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

The Hardap region is home to the second biggest dam in the country, ideal for irrigation projects.

Stakeholders in education have welcomed a motion for free Wi-Fi at schools nationwide.
 
They expressed these sentiments during a public hearing by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information, Communication, Technology, and Innovation at Oshakati.

The motion on free Wi-Fi in schools, public transport, and public institutions was tabled by Swapo member of parliament Modestus Amutse in the National Assembly in February last year.

The Board and Management of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) held a consultation meeting with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resources and Community Development over the effect of the 2021 strike on employees.

This follows regional visits the committee undertook to nbc offices countrywide, in which employees listed a number of concerns, including alleged failure by management to restore the relationships.
