The Deputy Minister of Labour, Industrialization, and Employment Creation, Hafeni Ndemula, has urged all employers to review workers' wages annually.

Ndemula, who was speaking at the commencement of Labour Day in Swakopmund, pointed out that some employers are still paying workers below the minimum wage.

Ndemula said after 33 years of independence, some workers are still subjected to unfair labour practises.

"We are dealing with the problem of unemployment that is threatening the future of the youth. It is regrettable to say that there are still employers who opt to operate with labour standards, and some do not pay their employees their minimum wages."

He called on those still unemployed to use their skills for self-employment.

Erongo Governor Neville Andre said COVID-19 highlighted the significance of workers in different categories and their role in economic revival.

Andre applauded trade unions for standing by the workers in the midst of difficult times.

"Workers and trade unions are at the heart of our country's economy; it is you who mine the minerals and introduce exports that fuel our growth. It is you who put the food on our table and bear the facilities that deliver the services our people need, and without your organised participation, our efforts to become more productive and comparative will not succeed. Employees have the talent to reshape our economy."
