Two out of the three Lady Justices appointed to the Supreme Court in an acting capacity took their oath of affirmation today.
This is the first time in the country's judicial history that two Namibian female justices have been appointed to the Supreme Court.
During the appointment of the three Lady Justices, the Supreme Court emphasised the concerning lack of female representation at the highest court in the country.
They reiterated that this absence is a significant concern and stated their commitment to address the matter.
Additionally, the judiciary released a statement explaining that the appointments of Schimming-Chase and Hannelie Prinsloo will help alleviate the workload of the Supreme Court.
Justice Esi Schimming Chase, who was appointed to the Windhoek High Court in April 2021, will now preside over cases in the Supreme Court until the end of April next year.
Similarly, Justice Hannelie Prinsloo, who has served as a High Court Judge since April 2017, will now join the Supreme Court bench until April next year.
Justice Rita Makarau, with more than 22 years of experience, currently serves on Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court. The judiciary highlighted that her extensive judicial knowledge will greatly benefit the Supreme Court.
Lady Justice Makarau is yet to take her oath of affirmation.
