Namibia's coastal towns are battling against high temperatures and sandstorms.

On Tuesday, poor visibility due to a sandstorm caused an accident on the B2 road between Arandis and Swakopmund, claiming the life of 48-year-old Morne Gareth Openshaw.

Shacks also burned down in Swakopmund's Mondesa and DRC areas, leaving families in the cold.

The Mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes, urged residents not to cook on an open fire.

Swakopmund Mayor Dina Namubes urged residents to be cautious when handling fires.

"I would like to appeal to all the people staying in shacks to please avoid lighting fires for cooking for now. Maybe make some arrangements with your neighbours that can help you cook on a stove or, rather, buy already cooked food or bread for the remainder of the week. We are still expecting a lot of strong winds."

Namubes says their office is working around the clock to replace shacks with permanent structures to avoid fire incidents.
