The demand for health care services is growing in the Erongo Region due to an ageing population, staff shortages, and an underdeveloped healthcare system.

During his State of the Region Address, Neville Andre says there is an aggravated lack of proper mental healthcare facilities and congested clinics and health centres both in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund districts due to urban migration.
 
Andre said the clinics were not built to accommodate a high number of patients.

He says that a lack of adequate transport and an ageing fleet, especially ambulances, hamper outreach services and timely patient referrals, resulting in costly maintenance services.

The region has also made some strides.

"In September 2022, the first cohort of 40 medical interns commenced their internship training at the two district hospitals. The domains offered are internal medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, family medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology. As part of strengthening the internship programmes, medical specialists in gynaecology and obstetrics, internal medicine, paediatrics, and surgery were recruited."
