The Katima Mulilo Town Council and MTC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will see the council provide its residents with free public Wi-Fi.
The Katima Mulilo Town Council's Chief Executive Officer, Raphael Liswaniso, said the council, with the help of MTC, aims to revolutionise their customers lives through innovative digital solutions.
"Partnership will boost our development and empower us to overcome challenges such as electricity deployment, supervision of theft, highline loss, and fee collection. We don't want our customers to say, no, we don't have internet. Now you can pay your bills wherever you are. So long as you're standing in this CBD, I want to inform you that this Wi-Fi is the start. We have started with the CBD, and from where we are, this Wi-Fi will cover the entire CBD until Kamunu Shopping Mall."
The town council also launched its toll-free numbers for services, including fire, rescue, traffic, water services, and the CEO's office.
Elton Katangolo is MTC's general manager for products and enterprise solutions.
"So what it means for MTC is that we are in a commercial engagement with KMTC; it is not a free service that MTC is providing, but it is Katima Mulilo Town Council that has taken that leap of faith to provide these services to citizens, as well as to students, to academia, to tourism, and for public places to receive connectivity."
The Zambezi Governor applauded the efforts aimed at developing the town.
"The KMTC's free public Wi-Fi, which we proudly launch today, represents a monumental step towards inclusivity and empowerment. Access to the internet has become an essential utility in our digital age, and by providing free Wi-Fi services to our residents and visitors, we bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to connect, learn, and thrive. This initiative will undoubtedly boost economic activities, support tourism, and enhance the overall livelihood of our community."
He implored all stakeholders to work together to build a smart city where technology empowers and uplifts all individuals.
