About 601 learners have enrolled from various schools in Opuwo at the new Otuzemba Primary School.

At present, the school has 16 teachers.

The school, which opened its gates at the beginning of this term, is expected to cater for learners from the surrounding locations and villages.

Otuzemba Primary School was necessitated by the huge number of learners from villages such as Okondaunue, Orutjandja, Otuzemba and Onduunje who travelled long distances to attend school at Kameru Primary School.

This was a challenge as parents could not afford taxi fares to and from school, despite the sometimes harsh weather conditions.

Opuwo Town Council member of the management committee, Matjiru Forester Tjijahura, noted that the school is an answered prayer, especially for the affected residence.

"Having this institution here at the centre of these locations, I think, will reduce the burden on the learners themselves in terms of travelling as well as on parents; sometimes our parents cannot afford to pay for taxis, but they are forced to pay for taxis for the kids to reach school.  But having a school here at the centre will really help these kids access education close to their homes."

The Director of Education, Angeline Jantze noted that education is the cornerstone of development, indicating that it teaches individuals to navigate, overcome challenges, and create a better future for themselves.

"In this school, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and compassion."

Angeline Jantze said education is a collective effort, and parents are urged to continue with their unwavering support and dedication to their children's education.

''Make sure, principal and teachers, that you compile a timetable where each grade will have a chance to pick up papers in the environment.  Teachers, learners, as I said, please teach our learners how to use the ablution facilities, provide them with toilet paper, and teach them, because this school is yours, take ownership of this school; it's yours, take ownership of this school.''

Otuzemba Primary School started construction in 2021 at a cost of N$25 million.

The school has the capacity to host about 900 learners.
