Social activist Michael Amushelelo, currently an inmate at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, has reportedly gone on a hunger strike to highlight his quest for freedom.

Amushelelo has been incarcerated since March 21, following an unemployment demonstration in the capital.

The hunger strike was posted on his Facebook page three days ago by his wife, who manages his social media pages.

The nbc News sought a comment from the Deputy Commissioner at the Correctional Facility, Veikko Armas, who said Amushelelo has been eating since Friday.

He said that the correctional service officials have been monitoring Amushelelo since the announcement of the hunger strike, and he has been having his usual eating routine, contrary to what is posted on social media.

Amushelelo's close friend Gregory Cloete said during a visit on Thursday that the activist indicated that he will embark on a hunger strike until he gets his freedom.

Cloete added that Amushelelo only has limited options to gain freedom, one of them being self-torture, as he sees no support from the outside.
