October 5th is World Teachers' Day. It is celebrated every year to recognise the important role that teachers play in education.

Our nbc News team visited Dr. Alpo Mbamba Secondary School in Rundu and compiled this report. 

33-year-old Tuhafeni Michael is the only teacher offering integrated performance arts in the north-eastern region.

The subject is a combination of music, dance, and drama. 

When the nbc News team paid his class a visit, learners were busy with music theory. 

The educator from Swakopmund says he never thought that he would be a teacher one day. 

He studied integrated performing arts at the College of Arts in Windhoek before going to the University of the Free State in South Africa to specialise in music. 

"He doesn't choose or doesn't have favouritism. He loves all of us and is there for us. Especially when it comes to being afraid to go on stage, he will be like, You can do this.

A learner at Dr. Alpo Mbamba Secondary School, Abilio Alberto, says, "He always finds time for us and likes to teach us new things for things that we actually need to know for us to move forward."

"He's a person who gives strength even when you are weak. He doesn't see you as a person who doesn't know anything but motivates you on how to do it," says Claudia Shitongeni, a learner at Dr. Alpo Mbamba Secondary School.

Michael says he uses a combination of humour and honesty to get through to his learners. 

He says this generation is fortunate to have subjects such as IPA in their curriculum. 

"I wish I had had this subject in high school; I think I would not have struggled as much as I did when I was at varsity. I had to learn a lot of concepts in a very short span, especially from my South African counterparts who were with me at university. They did this in high school already."

Michael's learners scooped first place at the anti-corruption song competition last month.

But that was not their only highlight this year. 

"Taking part in the ATKV APPLOUS competition, which is a singing competition based out of South Africa, as one of the first schools from Kavango to ever take part in this competition and getting a silver award. That was more instrumental because it showed that we are on the right path. We are doing something great."

Michael says IPA teaches learners self-discipline, how to speak, and how to stand up for themselves.

"Believe in your learners, and give them opportunities so that they can be great."
