The Councillor of Katutura East has called on the City of Windhoek (CoW) to write off the debts of the elderly and vulnerable people in the constituency.

Richard !Gaoseb said this at the handover of food parcels of which 300 senior citizens benefitted, courtesy of the Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC).

The food parcels include a bag of sugar, maize meal, rice, pasta, and cooking oil.

According to !Gaoseb, majority of houses are headed by elderly people who lack the financial means to settle their debts to the City of Windhoek.

"As a councillor, I am not happy, and I don't go to bed without praying. The City of Windhoek has closed down so many people's water and electricity, especially water, and now some people go around asking for water. This does not make me happy, but I can only go a certain distance with CoW and I tried to beg them to open water and electricity for elderly and vulnerable people."

He therefore called on the Council to write off these vulnerable people's debt.
 

"I stand firm with you, and I know N$1400 is not a big amount, but we appreciate the government, but CoW must understand us. My request to the CoW is if it is possible for the media to help the city of Windhoek write off the debts of the elderly. We are happy in Katutura East that today we are going to receive food parcels, but food must be cooked with water, but now if we don't have water, how must we cook?"
