Namibia's first ever battery-electric bus has arrived.

The arrival of the bus that cost more than N$8 million in Oranjemund aligns with Namdeb's value of sustainability and its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The e-Bus arrived in Oranjemund over a week ago and was unveiled to the employees and the Oranjemund community on Saturday.

Namdeb CEO Riaan Burger, who could not contain his excitement, reiterated that no business can claim to be geared for the future and contribute to the world in a positive way unless it becomes carbon neutral.

"As we introduce new technology, you also require different skills, and what we are going to need obviously with technology like this is new skill sets, and we are building that capacity. We have to train the people that are training our teams on site, and what it really requires of us is to build technical capacity to deal with this modern technology."

The e-Bus is a pilot test to reduce the use of diesel.

A total of approximately 30 drivers and 15 mechanics are expected to undergo driving and maintenance training.

Namdeb is exploring the possibility of procuring six additional similar buses over the next two years.
