It is a well-known fact that rural electrification significantly enhances the quality of life.
In light of this, residents of the Ondu Jovi Tenda location at Kalkfeld settlement in the Otjozondjupa Region expressed their gratitude to the government for the joy of having their houses electrified just in time for the festive season.
Our nbc News team in the region caught up with homeowners living in the 94 brick-structured houses at the settlement.
For the residents, electricity brings more than just light; it serves as the second most common source for entertainment and information through televisions, allows for extended hours for small businesses, and enhances overall security.
As they experienced their first holidays with electrified houses built almost five years ago, residents shared their sentiments.
Residents used the platform to advocate for houses to be connected with standpipes, enabling them to have flushing toilets.
Theresia Kasamane, the Kalkfeld Shack Dwellers Federation Facilitator, expressed that in 2024, the federation plans to acquire 100 plots for others on the waiting list to benefit from low-cost houses.
"We are very thankful that the people got electricity. It's not the end; it's the beginning. We are now awaiting the new ervens that are to be allocated to us. It's a 100-plot request for 2024. We are now busy with water provisions; just like it was mentioned, when there is no water, there is no life. So with that, I am saying thank you to the councillor and the nbc that came to visit us on Family Day."
Currently, households collect potable water from a communal tap at a cost of N$200 per month.
