The inaction of the ||Kharas Regional Council Management Committee remains the biggest governance challenge impeding socio-economic development in the region.

These were the sentiments shared by both the council's Chairperson, Joseph Isaack, and acting Chief Regional Officer, Bennie Diergaardt, at a gathering to mark the official opening of 2024.

The council's management committee has been inactive since June 2023.

This follows after three councillors not holding positions in the council refused to accept nominations to serve as council management committee members during the political office bearers' election.

Other challenges that faced the region in 2023, Isaack highlighted, are, among others, the absence of the substantive CEO for two years, locals losing out on tenders against outsiders, and drought conditions.

Isaack, however, says the challenges won't discourage the council from refining its organisational framework to make 2024 a year of excellence.

The regional council chairperson also thanked all public servants for their hard work and congratulated the NSSC Grade 11 class of 2023 for achieving a third spot on the national ranking list.

The office opening for the new year saw a low turnout.
