The International Court of Justice has ruled in favour of South Africa's request for emergency measures in its genocide case against Israel.

While the 17 judges of the ICJ did not rule on the allegations of genocide, a majority decision of the court did order Israel, among others, to take steps to prevent acts of genocide in its war in Gaza.

The court, however, did not order a ceasefire but requested that Israel allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The International Court of Justice says it has jurisdiction to preside over the case, contrary to Israel's contestations in its submissions to the court.

The majority of judges, 15 out of the 17, agree with South Africa that some of the acts of war by Israel may have violated international laws.

And therefore, the court issued an emergency order for Israel to abide by the genocide convention, further ordering Israel to allow humanitarian aid for Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.

The World Court also ordered that Israel prevent and punish any incitement to genocide.

South Africa's prayer for an immediate ceasefire was not granted, although Israel was also ordered to take more measures to protect Palestinians.

Allies of both Israel and South Africa are expected to comment on the ruling.

Since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, 2023, 25,700 Palastinians have been killed, 63,000 have been injured, and over 360,000 households have been displaced. The majority of the victims are said to be children.
