Pensioners are disappointed with the N$200 increment announced, as they were expecting more.

The late President, Dr. Hage Geingob, expressed hopes last year for a possible increment of between N$2,000 and N$3,000 in the old age grand.

The Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Iipumbu Shiimi, while tabling the National Budget in Parliament, announced an increment of only N$200 for pensioners.

Shiimi announced on Wednesday that the country's current financial status does not yet allow for the realisation of the late Geingob's dream, though highlighting that this may become a reality in time.

Despite the N$200 increment, some senior residents expressed their dismay.

A calculation of the high cost of living, coupled with water and electricity bills, leaves them with less every month.

Elfriede Tjezorondu expressed to nbc News that she felt hurt by the announcement.

She says, no matter how she tries to preserve it, her money is never enough, as the high cost of living exceeds her pension money.

Some say they hoped the state had at least raised pensions to one to two thousand dollars.

They say the late President understood their needs and looked out for them.

Susanna Biwa is grateful for the added N$200, saying it will make a difference, despite the fact that the amount may never be enough.

While calling for the late president's words to be heeded, the elderly say they want to see initiatives such as home gardens for the elderly, as well as the writing off of pensioners' water debt.
