The Namibian government remains steadfast in addressing the backlog of serviced urban land and affordable housing, providing an amount of N$297 million in subsidies to local authorities and regional councils.

President Nangolo Mbumba says this commitment is being carried out under the Mass Urban and Regional Land Servicing Programme.

The Mass Urban and Regional Land Servicing Programme has seen about 3,103 new plots fully serviced in various parts of the country, bringing the total number of serviced plots during the Harambee Prosperity Plan 2 period to 6,024.

President Mbumba says an additional 4,791 partially serviced plots are being serviced in partnership between the government, the Shack Dwellers Federation, and the private sector.

"The government provided a grant of N$10 million to the Shack Dwellers Federation for land servicing and housing and an additional grant of N$17 million towards the Federation's informal settlements upgrading programme. Mass Houses: The government has concluded a new agreement for 319 of the 505 uncompleted houses at Swakopmund, enabling the resumption of work and the completion of 200 houses by December 2023. The government, through the Community-Led Total Sanitation programme, completed about 591 ventilated toilets for households in various rural areas."

Cabinet approved the new National Housing Policy and Implementation Strategy in November last year.
