The councillor of Mukwe Constituency, Damian Maghambayi, urged the Minister of Finance to intervene in the upgrade of the Divundu Muhembo border road. Maghambayi was speaking during the belated 34th Independence Day celebration held at Bagani over the weekend.
"And this is the road that links Namibia with Botswana, and it's also good for international exports. Where we are linking neighbouring countries, such as Botswana and South Africa, you name them in SADC. Therefore, the honourable minister will have the opportunity to see it for himself. This road has been designed to be upgraded to a bitumen standard, and every year we are told the project has been postponed to the next financial year. During this financial year, we really need you, honourable minister, to speak to the sector ministry to expedite the implementation of this project."
After the belated independence celebration, Minister Iipumbu Shiimi inspected the road and acknowledged the challenges and need for upgrading the Divundu Muhembo border road.
"Obviously, as Namibia, we continue to invest heavily in our road infrastructure, and you know that we are the best on the continent. But we should continue to invest more in funding roads such as this one. This one is very significant for two reasons. First of all, it connects the two people of the two countries, Botswana and Namibia. In those countries, people are highly interconnected; they have families on both sides. Second, the road passes through the Bwabwata National Park, which is important for tourism. So the experience has been good, but I believe we should invest in upgrading our road infrastructure, and this one is not going to be an exception. We will continue to upgrade it until it has been upgraded to a level where we are all going to be satisfied."
While in the region, Shiimi also visited the Blueberry Farm project in Divindu for familiarisation purposes.
