The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has deregistered two political parties and asked that the National Assembly withdraw MPs from those parties with immediate effect.

The ECN deregistered the two parties for allegedly not complying with provisions of the Electoral Act of 2014 as they relate to the submission of financial statements.

The two parties are the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) and the Christian Democratic Voice (CDV).

The Chairperson of the ECN, Dr. Elsie Nghikembua, wrote a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, informing the Speaker about the latest developments concerning the two political parties.

It is not clear how the deregistration will affect the participation of NEFF and CDV in the November 27 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka has confirmed the deregistration of the two parties, saying that “the Commission confirms the deregistration of the NEEF and CDV. Details on the deregistration will be provided in due course."

Meanwhile, approached for comment by nbc News, NEFF leader Epafras Mukwiilongo confirmed the deregistration of his party; he was however not able to comment further, saying that he would provide more details to the media tomorrow.
