In its quest to curb cyber threats as well as shape a safer digital space, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has embarked on a three-day journey to seek innovative ways to fight cyber crimes.
The conference will provide a platform for stakeholders to build a resilient cybersecurity infrastructure to safeguard the nation's interests and institutions, as well as elaborate on the evolving landscape of cybersecurity.
The first-ever Namibia International Cyber Security Conference and Exhibition will also allow stakeholders from various countries to collaborate and share knowledge in the cybersecurity domain, pertaining to aspects such as the general economy.
The Deputy Minister of ICT, Modestus Amutse, says cybersecurity is not merely a technical concern but a fundamental pillar of national security, economic stability, and individual privacy in the digital age.
He says Namibia, like many other countries, is increasingly reliant on digital technologies across sectors such as oil and gas, mining, energy, aviation, mobile, and telecommunications.
"Cybercrimes know no boundaries, and every sector is at risk of cyberattacks, resulting in massive financial losses and reputational risks for organisations and individuals alike. The challenges faced by developing countries in securing the digital economy require collective efforts from governments, industry leaders, academia, civil society, and all players in the ecosystem. Through collaboration, we can develop effective strategies and solutions that will safeguard our digital infrastructure and enable us to fully harness the opportunities presented by the digital economy."
So far, Amutse says the Ministry has made good progress with Lifeline/Childline Namibia by finalising modalities to raise more awareness for children who are the most vulnerable in cyberspace.
The Chairperson of the Namibia International Cyber Security Conference, Paulinus Sheehama, says the conference will be an annual event.
"Mark your calendars for next year's conference from July 16–18, where we will come together for an even bigger and better experience."
The conference is held under the theme 'Emerging Cybersecurity Threads and the country's preparedness to build a safer digital space'.
