FC Ongos Ladies, champions of the recently concluded 2023/2024 First National Bank Women's Super League, are breaking new ground.

The team has become the first in Namibia to offer professional contracts and salaries to its female players.

This trailblazing move began during the past season, and Ongos Ladies are currently in the process of renewing contracts for the upcoming campaign.

Chairperson Monica Shapwa highlighted the initiative's goal of closing the gap between the treatment of women's and men's football in the country.

Ongos Ladies are aiming for equal opportunities and development for both genders within their organization.

Matthew Haikali, Head of Education at the Namibia Football Association (NFA), highlighted additional exciting advancements for Ongos Ladies.

This includes securing a license to compete in the prestigious CAF Women's Champions League.

It's important to note that while the men's football league in Namibia is not fully professional yet, Ongos Ladies' initiative will make them the first professional women's team in the country.

The Ongos men's team already operates under professional contracts.

Monica Shapwa also emphasized that the introduction of professional contracts aims to elevate women's football further.

She expressed plans to expand recruitment efforts, attracting talented players not only within Namibia but also internationally.
