The Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Ministry has served 8,228 people in the Kavango East Region in the recently concluded, six-month mass outreach campaign.

The outreach programme served to bring services closer to citizens in remote areas.

Control Administration Officer in the Directorate of Home Affairs in Kavango East, Hausiku Hamutenya, says many people focused on getting their national identity documents, resulting in fewer applicants queuing for voter registration.

"It has reduced travelling costs and transport costs where they have to access the service either in Rundu or the nearby sub-regional offices like Nyangana and Divundu. So we have come closer to the people at the grassroots level. As well as areas that are hard to reach, very remote areas whereby it is not accessible, we are reaching them."

Most residents said that without national documents, they would still not be able to participate in the upcoming elections, nor could they benefit from the drought relief programme.

The headwoman of Rundjarara village, Sidona Muranda, commended the government for bringing the services closer to the people.

The fee for issuing a duplicate of a birth certificate is N$100, while an ID duplicate costs N$150.
