The Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) has called for greater pastoral care for LGBTIQ+ individuals, while also reaffirming the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman, as instituted by God.

The CCN emphasized that, for some, marriage is a holy sacrament and a divine union between a man and a woman.

Rev.Enoch Sakama,President of CCN, stated:

“This union is not only a profound expression of love and companionship but also the divinely ordained context for procreation and the continuation of human life. CCN believes that companionship and intimacy are at the heart of marriage, and these may lead to procreation. The Bible provides clear guidance on this matter.”

Namibia has been divided in recent times following a high court ruling that decriminalized sodomy. LGBTIQ+ rights groups celebrated the ruling as a step towards marriage equality, while others remain divided on the issue.

The CCN also weighed in on the ongoing debate, urging clergy to engage with LGBTIQ+ individuals about their relationships and God's intentions for human and sexual relationships. The CCN encourages LGBTIQ+ people to seek guidance from church ministers and urges an end to violence against the community.

The CCN emphasized the importance of accompanying all believers on their spiritual journey, without prejudice or discrimination, and with respect, love, and care. The Council affirmed that all people, regardless of sexual orientation, are created in the image of God and deserve dignity and love.

The CCN further called on the church to promote ministries of healing and hospitality for all members, including the LGBTIQ+ community.
