A group of Keetmanshoop residents alleged nepotism in the appointments at the municipality as well as unfair labour practices.

The protesters, in a petition, accused the acting HR Strategic Executive Manager, Adam Isaack, of alleged nepotism.

They demanded the immediate appointment of a substantive HR manager and wanted the appointee to clean up the mess of alleged irregular appointments and unfair labour practices.

"People are appointed as interns, then the same people are given contracts of employment, and again the same people are appointed permanently. We want to know if the recruitment processes are followed because to us what we see is unfair and corrupt. The legal cost of the municipality is sky high: thousands of thousands of Namibian dollars paid on fully suspended members whose cases cannot be finalised while we have someone with high qualifications in the HR office," said group spokesperson, Sergio Christiaan.

The mayor of Keetmanshoop, McDonald Hanse, received the petition and said, "I will accept it, but it's very difficult. How do you receive it because no one signed, no names because that's what the petition is supposed to be? And you call yourselves an organisation; I just forgot the name of the organisation."

The mayor promised to grant the protestors an audience at a later stage and get answers to their questions.

HR Manager Adam Isaack declined to comment, saying the mayor's office is dealing with the matter.
