The four young children who died earlier this week after suffocating in a disused freezer in Cowboy Settlement in Katima Mulilo have been buried.

Mourners gathered at Katima Mulilo for a joint memorial service for five-year-old Mwaka Muzimisa and Variety Lubilo, three-year-old Maureen Simataa, and Matengu Chombo on Thursday.

The service was also attended by leaders as well as members of the Popular Democratic Movement who donated the four coffins.

The young ones who were known as friends who played together were described by their families as kind and thoughtful even at such young ages.

The children were discovered in a disused freezer on Monday afternoon by one of the relatives who went searching for them after not having seen them for a while.

The freezer locked from the outside, making it difficult for them to open it from the inside.

A preliminary report by the police indicated that they may have been there for hours.

Two of them were pronounced dead on the scene, while the other two were still conscious, but they were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Mwaka, Variety, and Maureen were buried side by side, while the only boy child, Matengu, was buried at his village in Makanga.
