The Chief Medical Officer at Intermediate Hospital Rundu, Dr. Medson Chibwe, revealed that around 600 people were admitted for mental health issues at the hospital between January and September this year.

Dr. Chibwe shared these figures during the World Mental Health Day commemoration on Friday.

“To put this in perspective, we’ve seen over 7,000 people visit our outpatient or casualty departments for mental health concerns for the first time, with nearly 600 of them requiring admission.

This shows that poor mental health is a significant issue,” he stated.

To raise awareness about mental health, health workers from Intermediate Hospital Rundu, joined by students from the health sector, marched through Rundu’s CBD as part of the World Mental Health Day activities.

The group later gathered at the hospital for a program aimed at emphasizing the importance of mental health in the workplace.

Nursing students performed two dramas during the event: one depicting an unsupportive work environment and the other highlighting a healthy, conducive workplace.

Health workers also participated in mindfulness exercises, essential for mental well-being.

Dr. Chibwe stressed the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace, noting its impact on productivity and employee engagement.

“Employees who feel emotionally supported are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and perform at their best. Open communication, access to resources, and a culture of understanding are essential for promoting mental well-being. Addressing mental health proactively can reduce stigma, improve morale, and create a healthier work environment. Employers must remember that investing in employee well-being is an investment in the success of the entire organization,” he emphasized.
