A lecture that took place at the University of Namibia's (UNAM) main campus recently explored both the positive and negative aspects of media and communication within the Namibian context.

Professor Jairos Kangira is the Coordinator of the Mass Media Professorial Lecture and explained its purpose.

"Our Professor Eno Akpabio gave a professorial lecture on media and mass communication. It is where he shows he has done a lot of work in this area. He has gone through the development of print media, electronic media, advertising, filming, and PR in Namibia and everything that has to do with mass communication. It is what we call an academic ritual; only a full professor is asked to provide a professorial lecture."

Professor Eno Akpabio presented an overview of media and communication in Namibia.

He shared insights from his experience in this field.

"We have a module called Media and Communication in Namibia. So I felt that there was a gap, and that is the gap I've tried to fill with this particular lecture by bringing up-to-date content in terms of media and communication so that when we teach the module, the students have absolute content, and this is part of what I wanted to achieve. When it comes to my experience, I have mentioned that I have the fact that I studied student newspaper; I have worked in several and also practised as a media and communication person, so I am bringing my practice to bear on my teaching and various experiences I have had across various sectors in media."

Akpabio also highlighted that the media industry lacks financial support and emphasised the need for more investment and funding in this area.
