The Roads Authority's (RA) Transportation Executive Officer, Sidney Boois, is concerned over the lax use of seatbelts in public transport.
Speaking from the B1 south roadblock, which is the Windhoek-Rehoboth route, Boois said over 40 passengers were sanctioned for not using safety seatbelts on Sunday afternoon.
At the Mariental Roadblock, five passengers were charged for not wearing available seatbelts in the public transport vehicle they were travelling in.
Another observation noted at the road traffic checkpoint was that public transport drivers and passengers had minimal to no understanding of the emergency exits available for their use.
They also could not explain the use of the fire extinguishers, emergency kits, and warning triangles that were absent.
Boois noted that they have observed passengers choosing to use illegal transport providers, such as seven-seater vehicles, for safety reasons, as these vehicles are equipped with functioning seatbelts.
Boois also stated that the majority of respondents were unaware of the emergency numbers to call in case of an accident, as well as the traffic violation report numbers.
He said vehicle owners too had little to no knowledge of tyre pressure and tyre tread depth.
