Barry Rukoro has defended his position as president of the National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO), arguing that his election was legitimate and followed the expiration of the previous leadership’s term on March 3, last year.
Rukoro claims that the party president, Dr. Esther Utjiua Muinjangue, was properly replaced during a congress held in August 2024, where he and other office bearers, including vice president Kapukatua Kuvare, were elected according to party procedures.
However, NUDO wants Rukoro to be restrained from passing off as a de facto leader of the party.
In court papers, the party says the congress was illegal and violated the party’s constitution.
The party alleges that Rukoro, Kuvare, and two other individuals were unlawfully elected and have since attempted to present themselves as the party’s leadership.
NUDO also accused the defendants of creating a fake letterhead to give the appearance of legitimacy.
Last year, Rukoro called a press conference where he announced the party’s support and collaboration with SWANU.
