The governor of the Kunene Region, Marius Sheya, says drought relief distribution efforts to needy communities in the region are facing delays.

This, according to Sheya, is because of the continued heavy rainfall, as gravel roads are being cut off by strong flowing rivers and flash floods.

"Now, most of the challenges would be the road terrain, damaged roads, and also, at times, rivers that are flowing. So, that also makes it quite difficult, and delays are being experienced in the distribution of consignments to the community for human and wildlife consumption. But I can also say we are getting there because we are really trying all types of methods on how to deliver this food effectively and for it not to stand for a very long time in the storerooms. So we have been distributing food as it comes, but I must acknowledge that we have challenges."

The governor says the hardest hit are the households of marginalised communities.

In the meantime, the Kunene Regional Council and the Office of the Prime Minister are collaborating to fast-track assistance to the farmers.

The council is also collaborating with the Opuwo Municipality to relocate and settle about 96 families whose living areas were destroyed by a flash flood in the Orujanja area earlier this year.
