The |Khomas Regional Council celebrated progress in combating HIV/AIDS through Regional AIDS Coordinating Committees, reviewing achievements and challenges to strengthen efforts.
In 2022, the council increased its HIV/AIDS budget from N$150,000 to over N$1.3 million to reduce infections, mortality, and bolster support programs.
The council provides essential food to people living with HIV and those in extreme need, expanding food support programs from 230 to 630 during the 2024/2025 financial year. An empowerment initiative was also introduced to foster self-sufficiency through income-generation activities.
"Let us remain dedicated to our shared goal of reducing HIV infections, supporting those affected, and ensuring a coordinated, multisectoral response. Through continued collaboration, strategic resource allocation, and innovative approaches, we can make a lasting impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Khomas Region," the council stated.
Preventative measures have been strengthened through quarterly condom distribution across all 10 constituencies, promotion of voluntary medical male circumcision, and community engagement. Stakeholders have also supported the building and improvement of health facilities.
"As I always say, we need to continue to intensify our community involvement and public awareness mobilisation campaign to ensure long-term impact in terms of prevention, observation of the health protocol, testing, vaccination, medication and treatment, and stigma and discrimination," officials emphasized.
Efforts include promoting prevention, education, testing, treatment, community initiatives, and addressing inequalities. "Khomas continues to make remarkable progress. Let us forge on until we reach a stage where we can say we have eradicated HIV/AIDS."
Namibia’s HIV counseling and testing rate stands at 93%, with gaps remaining among men, adolescent girls, young women, and key populations.
