As the host of the 2025 Namibian Newspaper Cup, Kunene Governor Marius Sheya shared that preparations for the event are progressing smoothly. Speaking to the media, Sheya confirmed that maintenance work on the stadium and renovations to government school hostel blocks are well underway to accommodate participants and visitors.
“We’re quite happy with the progress,” said Sheya. “Starting in January, we began renovations on the facilities, especially the school hostels, including those at Outjo Secondary School and Outjo Primary School. The progress has been fantastic, and the quality of the workmanship is excellent. The stadium, which will host the games, has also seen significant upgrades. The dressing rooms are complete, the pitches are in spectacular condition, and we’re now putting the finishing touches on the netball court."
The 2025 edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup, set to take place over the Easter weekend in Outjo, will feature soccer and netball games. Local authorities, along with the regional council and stakeholders, are working together to ensure the event runs smoothly. The theme for this year’s Cup is “Youth Against Anti-Poaching,” sending a strong message to unite young people against animal poaching. Sheya highlighted that the event would feature various activities focused on raising awareness about poaching, aiming to reach not only spectators in Outjo but also the broader Namibian audience watching the games.
“We are advocating against poaching, and we want to unite as young people to say no to animal poaching. There will be many activities throughout the Cup to convey this important message,” Sheya added.
In terms of safety and security, the Namibian Police and private security companies will ensure a visible presence around Outjo to maintain order throughout the event. With over 5,000 attendees expected, food and institution stalls, as well as accommodation facilities, are fully booked, reflecting the high demand for the event.
