Residents of Sikondo village, Kapako constituency in Kavango West Region, will finally have access to electricity after living without it for decades.
The locals, with the assistance of Gondwana Collection, managed to collect about N$400,000 in the past six years, but they needed at least N$3 million to power their village.
After numerous attempts asking the government to meet them halfway, the Ministry of Industrialisation, Mines and Energy agreed to avail N$2.7 million to electrify Sikondo.
NORED will procure the material, and a local contractor is appointed to take care of the labour.
The electrification project will see the setup of three transformers and power lines and will take about three months to complete.
The locals say they are looking forward to having streetlights and access to electrical appliances.
They are also happy that their children can now study when it's dark, adding that having access to light will make them feel safer at night.
Various residents, including employees from NORED and regional leadership, gathered under the headman’s tree on Tuesday to witness the signing of the agreement that will eventually brighten up Sikondo.
