The Swapo Party’s youngest MP, Fenny Tutjavi, says the Day of the African Child serves as a reminder of the power young people have to shape their futures.
She made these remarks while officiating the Pre-Pan-African Child’s Day celebration hosted by the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) at the party’s regional headquarters in Keetmanshoop, ||Kharas Region, over the weekend.
During the event, Tutjavi reflected on the significance of the day, which commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising when South African youth protested for equal education. She urged young Namibians to carry forward this legacy by embracing unity, diversity, and a shared purpose.
Tutjavi highlighted challenges facing Namibia’s youth, especially in the ||Kharas Region, where around 66% of the population is under the age of 34. She pointed to high unemployment, substance abuse, and crime as major concerns—issues she said require a joint response from the government, communities, and the youth themselves.
She encouraged young Namibians to take an active role in decision-making processes, cautioning that without their involvement, important decisions would continue to be made without their input.
